These comments were sent to me by aspiring authors who took advantage of the manuscript critique service I offer. All I've done with them is remove the identity of the sender to protect his or her privacy, and correct any typos.

"Let me begin by saying that your report on my manuscript is exactly what I needed. Far from being disheartened, I consider it absolutely vital that such criticisms can be made and acted upon in order to produce a publishable piece of work.

I had no idea that I was making so many fundamental errors, both grammatically and (appallingly) in terms of spelling and punctuation. Normally I'm pretty reasonable at both - I suspect I've been so busy focusing on the story that I'm just not seeing such faults.

Your comments on the excess descriptive content were also spot-on and well received. I say this not because I relish the prospect of removing such passages, but because you're not the first to make such a comment. I get friends to test read my work as often as possible for feedback, and one of them said something along the lines of "Great story, but too much waffle." So much for my idea of 'art'. I foresee a great deal of deleting in the days ahead...

Overall, I get the impression that my enthusiasm for the work has eclipsed my ability to produce a title that suits its target market. I've also missed a few standard industry requirements (font size, margins etc) that I should by now be familiar with. I'm just not seeing the wood for the trees. However, I can now get on with the business of removing these flaws, tidying everything up and getting the work out into the market. In addition, your article 'Inspiration, Perspiration, Publication'  is extremely helpful and highlights key points of the publishing process of which I was previously unaware.

All in all, your analysis has been excellent. I would not hesitate to recommend your services to another budding author. Hopefully, as a result of your feedback, this aspiring author may not have to aspire much longer. I'll let you know when I sign a deal."

"I found your critique helpful and well written."
